So...anybody got any progress pics of theirs to share. I've got a couple...nothing terribly exciting...just filling and sanding. I'm using Bondo, slightly thinned with MEK to fill the gaps and then sanding...not sure what grit sandpaper I'm using, but it's doing a fairly nice job. Still a few gaps that may get a second (or third) pass of filler and sanding. Not really sure, yet.
The nacelles and saucer have not been permanently attached, yet, just held together for the purposes of taking these shots.
You are on your way. Did you put the hangar deck, lounge, and botany bay inside? Keep us posted. I have too many models I need to finish, before I start mine. It is bought, so that is out of the way, and I got some of the electronics bought, to light it.
I haven't had the Chance to get mine out of the box yet. Well, I mean to build. I have taken it out and showed friends how damn big it is.
I was telling Doc how I want to get a 1/350 Enterprise "D" once. He didn't really look that impressed until I showed him the 1/350 "A" (Refit) then I showed him a Comparison of my 1/2500 "A" next to my 1/2500 "D". Then it was an Eye opener.

No, I didn't put the interiors in. I'd originally planned to, but since I don't have the resources (or finances!) to do interior lighting, I decided it would be pointless, since no one would be able to see the finished product. Unfortunately, I'd already installed the garden into the lower part of the engineering hull before I made that decision, and wasn't able to get it out without harming it, so I won't be able to finish and display it outside the ship, either.
I'm still considering the possibility that, once I get this one finished and have a handle of how it goes together, as is, I may buy a second one and THEN try my hand at lighting...we'll see! In any case, my plan with this one is that I'm going to paint-simulate all of the lighting effects (spotlights, windows, registry illumination, etc.) so it at least "looks" like it's lit.
I'll post more pics as I get more done, but my schedule is really busy, lately, so it may be a while before I get any further.
Now there's an idea. Paint it "lit". Apart from windows I don't think I've seen this attempted before. I know I'd be interested in seeing not only the final results but some of the steps you take to get there.

Well...here's my 22" AMT Refit, done with painted lighting. I did this about 10 or 12 years ago. The base coat is an out-of-the-rattlecan automotive primer, dark battleship grey color. It was a little darker than I'd really wanted. I just drybrushed the lighting effects on (I didn't have an airbrush). My PL WILL be airbrushed, so the effect should be even smoother. You'll also note a pitiful attempt at aztec...I just kinda randomly painted a few of the engraved panels (that I DIDN'T fill/sand away). I was just getting ready to completely repaint and decal this thing when I found out PL was doing the 1/350 (hence the pencil marks all on parts of the hull), so I ended up leaving it alone, figuring I'd keep it as a nostalgic, "first attempt" kind of thing.
My Attempt at Aztec took me to painting every Square. Not sure you can see it on these Pictures, but I did this model 24 years ago.
I spray painted the whole thing silver. And then with a bottle of silver paint, painted every other square. So it was all the same color, just that the brush [painted squares came out shinier that the others.
Interesting idea, Tholian. Even for a 24-year-old model, it looks really good...amazing that it's survived this long. I've built probably 15 of the AMT kits, mainly because they just don't hold together (particularly at the pylon joints). The one I showed above is, as I said, about 10 or 12 years old, and has managed to survive three household moves. The only way I kept it from breaking is by reinforcing the pylon joints with steel rods inside the joints...has held quite well.

Well, this one has been thru about five moves, a divorce and storage. As for the Pylons, if you notice by the first picture, the pylon does not line up right at the hull. This is because of numerous breaks. I think it is just a Chunk of Superglue right now, But it has found it’s way back into storage again. So not sure if it is all in one piece at the moment.

I have never built a refit before. I bought plenty of the AMTs, but the painting got me scared. I bought the PL 1/350, and when I get some money, I hope to buy the templets.
Federation Models were at the Nationals in Atlanta this year, I picked up the AMT/Turtle templates for the refit (A). Haven't had the chance to try them out yet. I have the excelsior templates, and ended up using them on the "B" for the first time. I will end up using these new ones on the Reliant Model before an actual Refit.
I will have to build one of the AMT refits, because I bought a conversion kit, to make a dreadnaught. Since the vacu-formed pieces have the engraved aztec pattern, I will have to use the same for the AMT.
