My primary passion for quite a few years has been model building. I'm one of those modeling geeks, which is prolly why I like to poke around with the technical aspects of stuff in SciFi shows.
Anyhow, I've been wanting to do some original design BSG ships for a while - some scratchbuild modeling. I've had an idea for a BSG AgroShip bouncing around in my head for some time now and finally made myself start on that project this last week. It's to-scale w/the old Monogram battlestar kit. These last two days is when I seem to have made the most progress - interestingly enough while under the pain-relieving care of a narcotic known as Percocet!
Anyhow, here you go: Kitbashed BSG AgroShip. While not exactly my best work, far from my worst. My main issue has to do with my usual symmetry problems. Oh, well. There's always the next one to get it that much more right. :)
Well to tell you the truth, I see the drug influence.
Really, I like your work. It is good to see other than ST for awhile. It looks like it is from TOS BSG. I think it is a better choice, than using the Valley Forge, from Silent Running.
Hey, at least the drug-induced influence is only in the final finishing phase, and not the design phase.
One of the things I love about TNS is that they used a LOT of ships from TOS. You get the Gemini Freighter, Colonial Movers, Prison Barge/Astral Queen, Celestra, "Flatop" and one or two others. Those TOS designs are mixed in with a few TNS originals, as well. The only negative I can see for TNS versus TOS is that there are only about 75 ships in the TNS RagTag Fugitive Fleet, whereas there were "more than 220 civilian ships" in TOS. More ships may make for more of a problem for Galactica in terms of defense, but it makes for lots more ideas for scratchbuilding and kitbashing.
Anyhow, much as I like the Valley Forge from "Silent Running", the use of stock footage from that movie for the agroships just seemed sort of cheap to me. Not sure why, exactly, but it just did. Thus, my desire to build this different design as an addition to either of the RTF's out there.
BTW, here are some pics of a few early kitbashes from my BSG universe. The Manufacturing ship and escort destroyer have advanced a little bit, but the "cargo ship/cruise liner" hasn't moved anywhere towards completion. I'll try and get some pics of other ships sometime over the weekend and buildup pages for them, as well.
You laugh, but I was thinking of adding a Star Trek ship to my RTF whenever I get around to painting them and lining them up for a pic. I think that the "Merchantman" from "Star Trek III: The Search For Spock" - the ship that carried the Genesis Device plans to Commander Kruge and was destroyed by him when the female operative admitted to seeing the plans - would fit in well.
I think they look fantastic. I myself am about to order the First season on DVD since I don't have Sci-Fi on my TV. So I am guessing I will be able to look at these ships for real soon.
I highly recommend you watch the series if you've not already seen it. It's not Yer Daddy's Battlestar Galactica - which is what I grew up with - but is a much more realistic mirror of that show. The characters aren't perfect and several of them have some serious issues in their lives - just like lots of us have issues in our lives. Get the set from Amazon.com that's titled as "Battlestar Galactica Season One (5 Disc) Box Set". That one includes the Miniseries, as well as all of Season One.
I also highly recommend the DVD Box Set for TOS BSG, which I recently received from Amazon.com.
I like the ship Griff. Although that sort of design has always raised one question for me. The purpose of the ship is to grow stuff (presumably for food) so why have the result of all that work and equipment just sitting out from the main body of the ship on a "stalk"? Seems like a flirtation with disaster.
Oh and as far as new BSG goes, it's quite simply the best show on television. Bar none. Period.
