Is branding really that crucial early on?

I keep hearing that we need to focus on building our brand, but we're a pre-seed startup with limited resources. Honestly, shouldn't we be putting all our energy into product development first? My co-founder says branding can wait until we have traction, but I'm not so sure. Can someone explain why everyone makes such a big deal about branding from day one?
